Hello, I’m Dan Thomas, the founder of FOCUS, Inc. a unique strategic management consulting practice that works with client management teams to help them develop and implement business and corporate strategies.

Unlike traditional consulting firms that write reports and tell clients what to do, I manage the client team through a process that enables clients to (1) develop an excellent strategy, (2) learn the process so they can continue to use it, and (3) become committed to the strategy because they have developed it.

My background includes experience as an educator, author, entrepreneur, corporate director, and consultant.

After completing a B.S. in Engineering Management and Economics as a Distinguished Graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy, an M.B.A. at Ohio State University and a Ph.D. at the University of Washington, I served on the faculties of the Harvard and Stanford Business Schools. I continue to teach a limited number of executive seminars for Stanford and individual corporations.

In my book, BUSINESS SENSE: Exercising Management’s Five Freedoms, I explored the five management processes that make the most difference between success and failure in a business.

As an entrepreneur, I’ve been a co-founder of three companies. As a director, I’ve served on the boards of six public and private corporations. In addition to typical director duties, I have experience in acquisitions and divestments.

In recent years several clients have asked me to use my knowledge of business and human behavior to help solve particularly difficult problems, including top management conflict situations.

As an independent consultant during my teaching career, and later as head of FOCUS, I’ve worked with more than 500 businesses in 125 different companies.

My wife Jeannie and I live in northern California.
